UK’s Solar Capacity Hits 22.8 GW Ahead of New Plug-in Regulations, Boosting Deployment Milestones

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM / RankWire.AI / – UK solar capacity reached 22.8 gigawatts at the end of June 2026, marking a significant increase in deployment. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero reported approximately 2.076 million installations across the country. During June alone, developers added 27,391 systems, which contributed 132 megawatts. These provisional figures may be revised as additional projects are incorporated into the official dataset. The total encompasses rooftop arrays, commercial installations, and large-scale solar farms, serving as a baseline before the implementation of new plug-in solar regulations.

UK solar capacity reaches 22.8 GW before plug-in launch
UK solar capacity reaches 22.8 GW as plug-in rules prepare for an August launch.

In June, the UK recorded its second-highest monthly installation count, with only March 2026 surpassing it at 28,782 systems. Over the 12 months ending in June, solar capacity expanded by 2.2 gigawatts, representing a 10.9% increase. The year 2025 saw a total of 269,000 installations, the highest annual figure to date, primarily on residential, commercial, and other building structures. Utility-scale projects continued to contribute to the nation’s overall solar power capacity, driving further growth in renewable energy production.

A key regulatory update is scheduled for August 27, when new rules for plug-in solar systems come into effect. These amendments introduce an approval pathway for small generators that connect via a standard UK plug and socket. Eligible devices are limited to a maximum of 800 watts of alternating current output and must operate in conjunction with the electricity distribution network while complying with Interim Product Specification version 2. Notably, the framework excludes plug-in batteries and products designed solely for storing electricity imported from household circuits.

Safety standards define plug-in system regulations

The new rules modify the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 and the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The statutory instrument was delivered to Parliament on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. A notified body may approve a standard plug when it complies with relevant BS 1363 standards and product specifications. This exception addresses an existing restriction on plugs used to connect generating equipment to sockets. While product approval provisions apply across the UK, the electricity safety amendment is valid in England, Wales, and Scotland.

The interim specification encompasses electrical design, British plug requirements, mounting systems, fire safety, and labelling standards. It sets the criteria that equipment must meet before being legally sold and connected. An electrical safety study tested representative plug-in solar systems on UK domestic wiring, finding stable operation under tested conditions, with no prolonged unsafe energisation or thermal hazards. The study also identified product quality differences, including export limitations and electromagnetic compatibility issues, which supported the development of a UK-specific specification and consumer guidance.

Industry response and consumer guidance after public feedback

Following a government consultation that gathered 466 responses from businesses, regulators, technical experts, and the public, over 85% endorsed the interim product specification. A majority also supported the proposed plug-in amendments. Stakeholders included energy suppliers, electricians, manufacturers, network operators, academics, and trade associations. Concerns raised by some respondents focused on older household wiring and noncompliant products sold through online marketplaces. Others warned that consumers might confuse the new rules with permissions for plug-in batteries. The government intends to release consumer guidance alongside the regulation’s start date.

Major retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl participated in preparations for the plug-in solar rollout ahead of the consultation’s close. The new format is tailored for households unable to install traditional rooftop systems, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor spaces. The total capacity of systems installed in June does not include those operating under the new plug-in framework, which cannot be legally used before August 27. From that date, only products meeting the 800-watt limit and interim safety standards will be permitted to connect via a standard household socket.

Eastern Japan Braces as Typhoon Dujuan Causes Heavy Rain and Wind Damage

    September 21, 2026

Eastern Japan faces flooding and travel disruption as Typhoon Dujuan moves through the region. At midday, the sizable and formidable typhoon was moving north-northeast over waters west of Hachijojima. It maintained a storm-force wind zone as it advanced toward the Izu Islands and the Kanto region. Forecasters predicted that the system would accelerate and pass near Kanto later in the day. Warnings included violent winds, extremely rough seas, and additional heavy rainfall along the eastern Pacific coast. Furthermore, linear rain bands could intensify rainfall levels across Tokai, Kanto, and the Izu Islands. The transport ministry reported three landslides in Chiba Prefecture by 2 p.m., which destroyed one residence and caused damage to another. In Miyazaki Prefecture, two additional landslides were recorded, resulting in one death, one injury, and damage to one home. Rainfall thresholds prompted closures of 32 sections across six expressways and three segments of two national routes. Flooded roads and fallen trees also led to the shutdown of 16 prefectural road segments across Ibaraki, Saitama, and Chiba.
