Michigan Confirms Two Fatalities Linked to Cyclosporiasis Outbreak, Officials Say

MICHIGAN / RankWire.AI / – The state of Michigan has verified two deaths related to its ongoing 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak, marking the first fatalities to be officially recognized by authorities. As of Aug. 3, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported a total of 11,234 cases. Through July 30, it also noted 193 hospitalizations. Medical records indicated both individuals had underlying health conditions that could have been impacted by cyclosporiasis and dehydration. Officials have stated they will not disclose additional details about these two individuals.

Michigan outbreak update confirms two cyclospora deaths
Michigan confirms two deaths as officials investigate a major cyclospora outbreak.

Both cases occurred prior to the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall announced on July 17. On Aug. 3, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the Michigan deaths, describing them as related to cyclosporiasis and involving individuals with pre-existing health issues. The total case count for Michigan encompasses all reports during the investigation and remains subject to updates. Federal data typically include laboratory-confirmed cases and may differ from state figures that also account for probable illnesses.

Federal authorities are also probing a nine-state outbreak of Cyclospora infections associated with iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. By July 24, nine states had reported 1,947 cases, with many patients noting exposure to Taco Bell. Additionally, at least 98 individuals in this group required hospitalization. The illness onset dates ranged from June 22 to July 20. The CDC later acknowledged Michigan’s two deaths, which were not reflected in the detailed federal totals available on July 24.

Recall involves iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico

Taylor Farms de Mexico has removed all iceberg lettuce originating from central Mexico from the U.S. market. The recall affected several food-service items as well as Marketside iceberg salad and shredded lettuce sold at specific Walmart locations. The product’s use-by dates spanned from July 18 through Aug. 3. Between June 29 and July 16, Taylor Fresh Foods distributed the affected lettuce to 27 states. Taco Bell ceased using lettuce from this supplier on July 17.

While Michigan officials have not definitively linked every case in other states to the recalled iceberg lettuce, they continue to consider lettuce or salad greens as a potential source. The state has yet to identify a single product, grower, or supplier responsible for the entire outbreak. Authorities acknowledge that other food items cannot be entirely ruled out in the broader investigation. The federal outbreak associated with lettuce accounts for only a portion of the cyclosporiasis cases reported nationwide.

Persistent symptoms may occur without treatment

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora. Infection typically results from ingesting contaminated food or water. The illness often presents with frequent watery diarrhea, appetite loss, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, and fatigue. Symptoms generally appear about a week after exposure, although this timing can vary. If left untreated, the illness might last longer than a month, with symptoms sometimes subsiding only to return later.

Health officials recommend that consumers avoid eating any recalled iceberg lettuce still in their possession. Discard the product or return it to the point of purchase. It is also important to clean containers and surfaces that came into contact with the recalled lettuce. Anyone experiencing symptoms should seek medical attention, especially if they consumed iceberg lettuce within the past two weeks. Michigan continues to update its case numbers as investigations by local and state health departments proceed.

Eastern Japan Braces as Typhoon Dujuan Causes Heavy Rain and Wind Damage

    September 21, 2026

Eastern Japan faces flooding and travel disruption as Typhoon Dujuan moves through the region. At midday, the sizable and formidable typhoon was moving north-northeast over waters west of Hachijojima. It maintained a storm-force wind zone as it advanced toward the Izu Islands and the Kanto region. Forecasters predicted that the system would accelerate and pass near Kanto later in the day. Warnings included violent winds, extremely rough seas, and additional heavy rainfall along the eastern Pacific coast. Furthermore, linear rain bands could intensify rainfall levels across Tokai, Kanto, and the Izu Islands. The transport ministry reported three landslides in Chiba Prefecture by 2 p.m., which destroyed one residence and caused damage to another. In Miyazaki Prefecture, two additional landslides were recorded, resulting in one death, one injury, and damage to one home. Rainfall thresholds prompted closures of 32 sections across six expressways and three segments of two national routes. Flooded roads and fallen trees also led to the shutdown of 16 prefectural road segments across Ibaraki, Saitama, and Chiba.
