MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN / RankWire.AI / – India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is currently attending the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting and engaging in bilateral trade discussions in the United States. The ministerial event is scheduled to occur in Milwaukee on September 30 and October 1. According to India’s Commerce Ministry, Goyal will also hold a meeting with his U.S. counterpart during this visit. The talks are expected to focus on the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement and aim to finalize an interim trade deal based on the joint framework established in February 2026.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is hosting the G20 event, which gathers trade ministers from member countries. The official agenda includes discussions on forced labour in global supply chains and the issue of excess production capacity. Participants will also debate the Most-Favoured-Nation principle and trade restrictions related to food. Throughout the event, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has scheduled ministerial sessions across both days, complemented by industry meetings and events in Milwaukee.
India emphasized that it will use the occasion to promote a multilateral trading system that is open, transparent, and non-discriminatory, with the World Trade Organization at its core. The government also highlighted the importance of maintaining policy flexibility for developing nations. On the sidelines, Goyal intends to hold bilateral meetings with other participating ministers. These discussions will focus on opportunities for farmers, fishermen, women entrepreneurs, startups, small businesses, and other trade-related enterprises involved in domestic and international markets.
Focus Returns to Trade Agreement Negotiations
The ongoing India-U.S. trade talks are based on a joint framework announced in February for a provisional agreement aimed at mutually beneficial trade. This framework reaffirmed the intention to negotiate a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement and outlined commitments related to tariffs and market access for industrial goods and agricultural products. Additional areas of discussion include medical devices, information and communications technology, standards, and supply-chain cooperation. Both governments continue to work towards finalizing the interim deal within the scope of broader bilateral negotiations.
Goyal’s visit to the U.S. spans from September 29 to October 5 and includes meetings beyond the G20 summit. He plans to engage with business leaders and investors in Milwaukee and Chicago, representing sectors such as manufacturing, consumer goods, agribusiness, retail, and technology. The schedule also features roundtables with startups and various companies. In Chicago, Goyal will meet with professional associations representing the Indian community and participate in scheduled commemorative events during his stay.
Supply Chains and Capacity Discussed at G20
The Milwaukee agenda features a Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity on September 30, with G20 ministers also visiting a Rockwell Automation facility before the official opening later that day. Additional ministerial sessions are planned for October 1. The United States holds the G20 presidency in 2026, and officials have prioritized discussions on forced labour, excess capacity, food trade, and the Most-Favoured-Nation principle during the summit.
India and the United States initiated negotiations for a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement in February 2025. The February 2026 framework keeps these discussions active while establishing the foundation for an interim arrangement. Goyal’s meetings in Milwaukee are part of this ongoing process, focusing on advancing the bilateral agreement and completing the interim deal outlined in the joint framework. The G20 event continues through October 1, while Goyal’s broader U.S. trip extends until October 5.
