    Michigan Confirms Two Fatalities Linked to Cyclosporiasis Outbreak, Officials Say

    Michigan confirms two deaths as officials investigate a major cyclospora outbreak. Both cases occurred prior to the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall announced on July 17. On Aug. 3, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the Michigan deaths, describing them as related to cyclosporiasis and involving individuals with pre-existing health issues. The total case count for Michigan encompasses all reports during the investigation and remains subject to updates. Federal data typically include laboratory-confirmed cases and may differ from state figures that also account for probable illnesses. Federal authorities are also probing a nine-state outbreak of Cyclospora infections associated with iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. By July 24, nine states had reported 1,947 cases, with many patients noting exposure to Taco Bell. Additionally, at least 98 individuals in this group required hospitalization. The illness onset dates ranged from June 22 to July 20. The CDC later acknowledged Michigan’s two deaths, which were not reflected in the detailed federal totals available on July 24. Recall involves iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico Taylor Farms de Mexico has removed all iceberg lettuce originating from central Mexico from the U.S. market.
