MENA Newswire, RABAT: Côte d’Ivoire and Algeria advanced to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday after winning their respective round-of-16 matches in Morocco, where the continent’s premier football tournament is being staged. The two victories continued the knockout phase of the competition and confirmed the first teams to secure places among the final eight.

Algeria and Cote d’Ivoire advance as AFCON knockout stage narrows the field.

Côte d’Ivoire qualified with a 3-0 win over Burkina Faso at the Marrakech Stadium, producing the most decisive scoreline of the round so far. The Ivorian side established control of the match early and maintained pressure across both halves, converting scoring opportunities while limiting Burkina Faso’s attempts to respond. The result ensured progression within regulation time and ended Burkina Faso’s tournament run at the last-16 stage.

The match in Marrakech was played in front of a large crowd as tournament organizers continued to rotate fixtures across host cities. Côte d’Ivoire’s performance reflected consistency across defensive and attacking phases, with the team preventing Burkina Faso from registering a goal throughout the contest. Burkina Faso, who entered the knockout round after advancing from the group stage, were unable to alter the course of the match and exited the competition following the defeat.

In Rabat, Algeria secured their quarter-final place after a 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the Moulay Hassan Stadium. The match remained scoreless after 90 minutes, with neither side able to break through during regulation time. Algeria eventually found the decisive goal during extra time, concluding the contest after 120 minutes of play.

The encounter was marked by extended periods of balanced play, with both teams contesting possession and limiting clear chances. Algeria’s goal in extra time proved sufficient to decide the outcome, as the Democratic Republic of the Congo was unable to equalize before the final whistle. The result brought an end to the Congolese team’s AFCON campaign, while Algeria advanced to the next round.

AFCON knockout stage intensifies in Morocco

Tuesday’s fixtures formed part of a broader knockout schedule being played across several Moroccan cities. The tournament, hosted by Morocco, has utilized multiple stadiums to accommodate the expanded format and match calendar. Organizers have reported steady attendance and continued adherence to competition regulations as teams progress through the elimination rounds.

The Africa Cup of Nations, organized by the Confederation of African Football, brings together national teams from across the continent and is regarded as one of the major international football tournaments outside Europe and South America. This year’s edition in Morocco has drawn attention from regional and global audiences, with matches broadcast internationally and followed closely by supporters across Africa and beyond.

Quarter-final lineup nears completion in AFCON Morocco

With the conclusion of these two round-of-16 matches, the focus now shifts to the remaining fixtures scheduled to determine the full quarter-final lineup. Tournament officials said the quarter-final schedule would be finalized once all last-16 matches are completed, allowing teams adequate preparation time in accordance with competition guidelines.

Côte d’Ivoire and Algeria will join other qualified teams in the next stage as the tournament moves closer to its final rounds. The quarter-finals will further narrow the field, with only four teams advancing to the semi-finals. As the knockout phase continues, host cities including Marrakech and Rabat remain central to the competition, providing venues for matches that will determine the eventual Africa Cup of Nations champion.
