DUBAI, UAE / RankWire.AI / – On Tuesday, Emirates, the flagship airline, announced the launch of a new cryptocurrency checkout feature, allowing qualified passengers to purchase flights using digital currencies on its website and mobile application. Confirmed by Emirates News Agency, the partnership between Emirates and Crypto.com introduces travelers to a fresh payment method, stemming from a strategic memorandum of understanding initially signed in July 2025. This digital asset payment gateway is accessible to residents of the United Arab Emirates for both international and domestic flights, with prices and settlements denominated in Emirati Dirhams (AED). Payments are processed through Crypto.com’s checkout system, providing users immediate access to their digital wallet balances during the ticketing process.

The payment architecture enables users of the mobile app to seamlessly transfer to their digital wallet app for authorization of flight payments before returning to the airline’s interface to receive e-tickets. For desktop users, the process involves selecting the digital payment option, scanning a QR code displayed on the screen with their mobile device, and confirming the transaction within the wallet app. Once validated across the payment network, automated systems promptly generate flight itineraries and electronic travel documents. This payment solution operates under the oversight of the Central Bank of the UAE, which issued Crypto.com’s Dubai-based entity a Stored Value Facilities license.

This commercial rollout supports regional economic initiatives, notably the Dubai Cashless Strategy integrated into the larger D33 Economic Agenda, which aims for ninety-nine percent of financial transactions to be digital by the end of 2026. The airline’s digital checkout integration builds upon previous agreements with Dubai Finance to broaden digital settlement protocols in both the public and private sectors. Financial technology experts observe that integrating digital wallet payments enables international airlines to appeal to tech-savvy consumers, reducing reliance on traditional card-processing systems. Settling transactions in local fiat currency allows Emirates to accept digital assets while maintaining financial stability amid cryptocurrency market fluctuations.

The Evolution of Digital Payment Methods in Commercial Aviation

Global airline operators continue to investigate blockchain-based solutions and alternative settlement channels to enhance international booking processes. Data indicates that airlines offering digital currency payment options gain a competitive edge, especially among younger international travelers who prefer managing their finances through mobile wallets. Several regional and global airlines have already adopted similar digital payment systems to provide more diverse checkout options. The successful implementation underscores how clear regulatory frameworks for virtual asset service providers help traditional transportation businesses safely incorporate modern financial technology into high-volume consumer transactions.

Commenting on the deployment, Adnan Kazim, Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer at Emirates, emphasized that this initiative reflects the airline’s dedication to broadening customer payment choices. He pointed out that the transition from signing agreements to full operational launch took less than a year, driven by a supportive regulatory landscape and shifting preferences among younger, digitally proficient travelers who plan their trips primarily via mobile devices. Regarding the milestone, Crypto.com’s President and Chief Operating Officer, Eric Anziani, expressed pride in assisting Emirates as it adopts digital payment methods. He highlighted that this collaboration exemplifies the UAE’s innovative approach to commercial advancements.

Integrating Mobile Wallets with Travel Booking Processes

Extensive security testing was conducted during the deployment phase to ensure compliance with international financial standards and local virtual asset regulations. The system allows for immediate payment verification, supporting real-time seat inventory updates and automated ticket issuance without delays. As transaction volumes increase, Emirates and its technology partner intend to analyze operational metrics to explore potential expansion into additional international currencies. This initiative positions the Dubai-based airline at the forefront of digital payment integration within the global aviation industry.

This launch signifies a notable milestone in merging global aviation services with digital financial infrastructures. As financial tech continues to advance, partnerships between major airlines and licensed virtual asset providers set new standards for seamless international travel checkout experiences, aligning with broader efforts to digitize economies across regional and international markets.

Eastern Japan Braces as Typhoon Dujuan Causes Heavy Rain and Wind Damage

    September 21, 2026

Eastern Japan faces flooding and travel disruption as Typhoon Dujuan moves through the region. At midday, the sizable and formidable typhoon was moving north-northeast over waters west of Hachijojima. It maintained a storm-force wind zone as it advanced toward the Izu Islands and the Kanto region. Forecasters predicted that the system would accelerate and pass near Kanto later in the day. Warnings included violent winds, extremely rough seas, and additional heavy rainfall along the eastern Pacific coast. Furthermore, linear rain bands could intensify rainfall levels across Tokai, Kanto, and the Izu Islands. The transport ministry reported three landslides in Chiba Prefecture by 2 p.m., which destroyed one residence and caused damage to another. In Miyazaki Prefecture, two additional landslides were recorded, resulting in one death, one injury, and damage to one home. Rainfall thresholds prompted closures of 32 sections across six expressways and three segments of two national routes. Flooded roads and fallen trees also led to the shutdown of 16 prefectural road segments across Ibaraki, Saitama, and Chiba.
