    London /  RankWire.AI / – A wealth of scientific evidence confirms that human actions are the main driver behind the severe water shortages currently plaguing Europe. The findings demonstrate that climate change is playing a significant role in intensifying drought across the region. An international team of researchers identified that extreme heat, rather than merely reduced rainfall, serves as the key factor behind the unprecedented dry spell. The area is dealing with shrinking river systems, enforced water restrictions, and widespread wildfires following record-breaking temperatures in June. This recent research underscores how a warming atmosphere accelerates evaporation from lakes, rivers, and soils. Despite below-average rainfall this spring, human-induced temperature rises ultimately transformed what was a dry period into a critical crisis.

    Scientists link global warming to intense European drought

    The World Weather Attribution group released a study illustrating how increasing temperatures actively deplete natural water supplies. Mariam Zachariah of Imperial College London pointed out that the drought is not mainly a consequence of insufficient rainfall but is driven by a warmer atmosphere causing greater moisture deficits on land. This means the risk of drought continues to escalate even when rainfall patterns remain largely steady. Scientists explain that for each 1 degree Celsius increase in temperature, the atmosphere’s capacity to hold water vapor grows by about seven percent. This increased capacity results in heightened evaporation from soil and plant life across the entire landscape.

    Using extensive weather data and sophisticated computer models, researchers compared today’s hotter climate with a hypothetical scenario 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Their analysis revealed that soils in western Europe are now five times more prone to extreme dryness than in a climate unaffected by human warming. Similarly, in eastern Europe, such soil moisture deficits are 11 times more likely. The study also indicated that the probability of experiencing very high evaporative demand between April and June in western Europe increased by about 80 times. As a result, rainfall deficits that once wouldn’t have caused severe droughts now lead to substantially drier soils.

    The Role of Extreme Heat in Soil Moisture Depletion

    Dominik Schumacher of ETH Zurich highlighted how the tendency for soil to dry out abnormally has already been evident in spring, before summer’s arrival. He explained that as temperatures rise, the atmosphere’s thirst for moisture accelerates, drawing water from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and the ground itself. The combination of a relatively wet start to the year and the onset of extreme heat created ideal conditions for large wildfires. This rapid land drying heightened the risk of fires spreading, leading to severe blazes across several countries. The findings confirm that climate change worsens drought conditions across Europe and is shifting weather patterns into highly dangerous cycles.

    The agricultural sector faces extraordinary challenges due to the widespread loss of vital soil moisture. These drought conditions are putting intense pressure on farming communities and causing historic crop failures across multiple nations. France is projected to have its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, indicating a major disruption in regional food production. Meanwhile, Romania has lost over one million hectares of maize, further threatening the stability of the agricultural supply chain. These significant domestic shortages, combined with ongoing global conflicts, risk driving up food prices and disproportionately impacting low-income households.

    Heatwaves Amplify the Effects of Low Rainfall

    Hydrological effects are intensifying economic damages, with unusually low river levels disrupting essential transport networks. Major shipping interruptions across critical waterways reflect the growing severity of the continent’s water scarcity crisis. Reduced river flow threatens energy production in regions that rely heavily on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that the recent June was the hottest recorded in western Europe. Many nations are already imposing emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential water use to conserve dwindling supplies.

    Scientists warn that if global temperatures continue to rise, drought conditions like these could occur more frequently. Experts emphasize that such intense evaporative conditions are happening at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming. If emissions remain unchecked and temperatures reach 2.8 degrees Celsius, the likelihood of these conditions could double. Without immediate and decisive emissions reductions, the continent faces a future of ever more scorching and arid summers.
